Dr. Michiel Callens is a Lead Waveguide Systems Engineer at Meta working on bringing true Augmented Reality to the masses through waveguide technology. Prior to that, he held senior optical design positions at both Meta and DigiLens and developed a novel reflective display technology at Clearink Displays.
Michiel started volunteering for SID while studying at Ghent University and has been a very active volunteer ever since. He was the chair for the student chapter in Ghent and, after holding a variety of functions within Bay Area SID, he now serves as the chair. By running for RVP, Michiel hopes to further increase his commitment to building the SID community in the Bay Area as well as become more involved in SID initiatives further afield.
Michiel earned his PhD in photonics engineering for his work on anisotropy in OLEDs in 2018 and holds a joint M.S. in photonics from the University of St Andrews and Ghent University. He has authored numerous peer reviewed papers and holds patents in a variety of display-related applications, ranging from OLEDs to reflective low-power displays as well as a number of waveguide technologies.
